Lagos Mourns Veteran Actor Ogogo

Lagos State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran actor and cultural icon, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, describing his passing as a major loss to Nigeria’s creative and cultural sector.

The state government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said Hassan made significant contributions to the growth of the entertainment industry and the promotion of Yoruba culture throughout his long career.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the late actor as a gifted storyteller and cultural ambassador whose work helped preserve and project Yoruba traditions to audiences in Nigeria and beyond.

According to the commissioner, Hassan’s contribution went beyond acting, as he used theatre and film to promote Yoruba values, language and cultural expressions while entertaining generations of Nigerians.

The ministry noted that his years in the theatre and film industry left a lasting impact on Lagos’ creative landscape and the wider Nigerian entertainment industry.

Benson-Awoyinka said Hassan’s body of work would remain a source of inspiration for upcoming actors, filmmakers and other professionals in the creative sector.

She also extended the ministry’s condolences to the actor’s family, friends, colleagues and the wider Nollywood community, describing his death as a painful loss to the creative and cultural community.

The commissioner prayed for the peaceful repose of Hassan’s soul and strength for his family and loved ones to cope with the loss.

The ministry urged fans and members of the creative industry to honour the late actor by preserving the values of dedication, cultural pride and professionalism that defined his career.

Taiwo Hassan, widely celebrated as Ogogo, was known for his decades of contributions to Yoruba theatre and Nollywood, particularly through roles that reflected Yoruba culture and traditions.
