Honesty
We do not misrepresent ourselves to sources or the public. Undercover reporting is used only when the story is of significant public interest and the information cannot be obtained any other way, with editor approval.
Independence from influence
Journalists do not accept gifts, hospitality or payments from people or organisations they cover, beyond routine items of nominal value.
Respect for people in the news
We treat sources, subjects and readers with dignity. We take special care with victims of crime, minors and people in vulnerable circumstances.
Privacy
We publish personal information only when there is a clear public interest that outweighs the individual's right to privacy.
Accountability
We answer for our reporting. Reader complaints are reviewed by editors independent of the original story, and outcomes are shared with the complainant.
