The disciplinary action against the 41-year-old forward followed an incident in September, when he left Portugal’s camp ahead of their UEFA Nations League encounter with Denmark.
The development came after Ronaldo was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s match against Norway on September 27. He was subsequently informed that he would not start the game against Denmark, prompting frustration over his position in the team.
Ronaldo reportedly accused coach Jorge Jesus of failing to honour commitments regarding his playing time. Jesus, however, denied making any agreement with the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star.
The federation’s disciplinary council upheld the charge against Ronaldo, ruling that he deliberately breached its disciplinary regulations by leaving the national team camp.
In determining the punishment, the authorities considered his apology, expression of regret, sporting achievements and previous disciplinary record. The €255 fine and 30-day suspension represent the sanction imposed for the incident.
Ronaldo had earlier apologised for his conduct, including his failure to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and his decision to leave his teammates. He also indicated his willingness to accept the consequences of his actions.
Despite the disciplinary action, the federation has expressed its desire to see Ronaldo return to the national team once the matter is resolved.
Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on November 14 before travelling to play Wales on November 17 in their Nations League fixtures.
Reports indicate that the suspension period began in connection with the October 1 match against Denmark, meaning Ronaldo may have completed the ban before the next international fixtures.
However, the disciplinary announcement did not clearly explain how the suspension would apply to specific matches.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, with a career that includes five Ballon d’Or awards and major international honours.
