The Argentine defender spoke out after Tuesday's encounter in Madrid, where United suffered another setback in a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign. The defeat extended the club's winless run to five matches across all competitions.
Martinez expressed concern over the club's recruitment decisions during the summer transfer window, arguing that stronger investment was needed after Manchester United's impressive campaign last season earned them a return to Europe's elite club competition.
He specifically called for greater support from technical director Jason Wilcox, suggesting that the club's management must accept responsibility for the team's current struggles instead of allowing the pressure to fall mainly on the coach and players.
The defender acknowledged that the players must improve their own performances but stressed that building a competitive squad is also a responsibility of the club's leadership.
According to Martinez, United need sufficient quality and depth to face Europe's strongest sides, pointing to Atletico Madrid as an example of a team with the resources and strength to compete at that level.
The match itself began badly for the visitors, with Atletico taking the lead through Pablo Barrios inside the opening minute. Manchester United attempted to recover, but Ademola Lookman later scored the second goal to secure victory for the Spanish side.
The result has added to the pressure surrounding head coach Michael Carrick, whose team has struggled to find consistency in the early stages of the season.
Martinez, however, warned against making the manager the sole target of criticism whenever results go wrong. He suggested that the club must also examine decisions made higher up the leadership structure.
His comments have brought renewed attention to Manchester United's recruitment strategy and the balance of responsibility between the coaching staff, players and senior management.
With expectations high following the club's return to the Champions League, United now face growing questions over whether their summer preparations were sufficient to meet the demands of competing at the top level.
The coming matches will be important for Carrick and his squad as they seek to end their poor run and restore confidence among supporters.
