Ancelotti Warns Lille Against Giving Osimhen Room to Strike

Lille manager Davide Ancelotti has urged his players to remain alert in every phase of play as they prepare to face Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League.

The French side will host the Turkish champions at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday, October 21, with Osimhen expected to lead Galatasaray’s attack in a crucial league-phase encounter.

Ancelotti believes that stopping the Super Eagles forward will require discipline and coordination across the entire team, rather than leaving one defender to deal with him.

The Lille coach acknowledged Osimhen’s ability to influence major matches, recalling his impressive spell at Napoli, where the striker played a key role in the club’s Serie A title triumph in the 2022/2023 season.

He said Lille must be cautious both when attacking and when defending, warning that Galatasaray have several experienced players capable of punishing defensive mistakes.

The manager also highlighted the visitors’ threat on the counterattack, stressing that his team must maintain a proper balance when committing players forward.

For Lille, the encounter presents an opportunity to improve their position in the Champions League after a difficult start to their European campaign. Galatasaray are equally under pressure following defeats in their opening two league-phase matches.

Osimhen’s return to Lille adds another dimension to the fixture. The Nigerian striker played for the French club during the 2019/2020 season, scoring 18 goals in 38 appearances before moving to Napoli.

His familiarity with the club and the expectations surrounding his attacking threat could make him one of the central figures in Wednesday’s contest.
