Nigerian football icon Augustine Azuka Okocha has opened up on the childhood story behind the famous “Jay-Jay” nickname that later became a global identity in football.

The former Super Eagles captain revealed that the name was not created by football promoters or given to him because of his exploits on the pitch.

Rather, it began as a simple way of distinguishing him from other boys who shared the name Austin in the neighbourhood where he grew up.

Okocha said he and his brothers were regulars in the local street football scene, with several boys in the area also bearing the name Austin.

According to him, his friends eventually started calling him “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother” to distinguish him from the other Austins.

Speaking during an appearance on the ObiOne Podcast, Okocha explained that the shortened version of the name gradually became “Jay-Jay” and followed him as he progressed in his football career.

“It started in the neighbourhood where we grew up. All of us were footballers; we were just on the street playing, and my two brothers played as well. We had a few Austins then, so to identify which Austin was which, they started calling me Austin Jay-Jay’s brother. From there, Jay-Jay stuck,” he said.

The football legend also disclosed that the nickname became even more useful when he began travelling outside Nigeria, as some people found it difficult to pronounce his full first name, Augustine.

He said he eventually embraced the nickname so much that he officially adopted it and had it included in his passport.

“When I travelled, some people struggled to pronounce my name, Augustine, so Jay-Jay was a lot easier. I decided to adopt the name and put it in my passport. I still pay royalties to my brother,” Okocha added jokingly.

Okocha, whose full name is Augustine Azuka Okocha, went on to build one of the most celebrated football careers by a Nigerian player.

His dazzling dribbling skills, creativity, close control and ability to entertain supporters made “Jay-Jay” a household name far beyond Nigeria.

He enjoyed successful spells with clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe, while also becoming one of the most influential players of his generation in the Nigerian national team.

For many football fans, the name Jay-Jay became almost inseparable from the image of a player capable of turning defenders inside out with his skills and flair.

Years after his retirement from professional football, the nickname remains firmly attached to Okocha's legacy — a name that started on the streets of his childhood neighbourhood and eventually became known across the world.
