Kwara Assembly Member, Saba Gideon, Quits APC Over Internal Democracy Concerns

The member representing Edu State Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, Saba Gideon, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing concerns over internal democracy, fairness and inclusiveness within the party.

Gideon confirmed his resignation on Thursday, stating that he had formally communicated his decision to the APC Ward Chairman of Tsaragi Ward 3 in Edu Local Government Area.

In the resignation letter dated August 19, 2026, the lawmaker said the decision followed consultations with his constituents and other stakeholders, as well as careful consideration of recent developments within the party.

He said his concerns over the way the party's internal affairs were being handled informed his decision to leave the APC.

Gideon, who chairs the House Committee on Livestock, however, assured his constituents that his resignation would not diminish his commitment to representing their interests.

He pledged to continue serving the people of Edu State Constituency, Kwara State and Nigeria with integrity, dedication and accountability.

The lawmaker expressed appreciation to the APC and its members for the opportunities and support he received during his membership of the party.

Gideon did not disclose which political party or platform he intends to join next.

The latest development comes months after Gideon was suspended by the Kwara State House of Assembly for three months over allegations bordering on contempt and breach of legislative privilege.

The Assembly suspended him on December 18, 2025, following allegations that he secretly recorded a closed-door meeting of the lawmakers and shared the audio with an unauthorised person.

The suspension was subsequently challenged by Gideon in court.

In February 2026, the Kwara State High Court nullified the suspension, describing the action as unconstitutional, unlawful and of no legal effect.

The court held that the procedure adopted by the Assembly, including the use of a motion without notice, violated the lawmaker's rights and was not supported by the relevant provisions of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017, or the Assembly's rules.

Gideon's resignation from the APC now adds a new dimension to the political developments surrounding the Edu lawmaker, whose relationship with the leadership of the Assembly had come under strain following the suspension saga.

For now, his next political move remains unknown, even as his departure from the ruling party is expected to generate further political discussions in Kwara State.
