NewsmongerThe Oloro of Oro has called for greater support and promotion of Yoruba culture, decrying heavy spending on activities that encourage nudity. The Oloro of Oro and Paramount Ruler of Oro Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye Olufayo II, JP, has expressed concern over the huge sums of money being spent on social activities that, in his view, promote nudity and immoral behaviour in Nigeria.
The monarch made this known while speaking with a Newsmonger correspondent on the need to embrace, preserve and promote indigenous culture in the country.
Speaking as a custodian of culture and tradition, Oba Olufayo lamented that many wealthy entrepreneurs and business leaders were not doing enough to support Yoruba culture, a situation he said was making efforts to promote and preserve the people's cultural heritage more difficult.
He noted that some social events and entertainment activities associated with nudity attract significant financial investments and generate billions of naira, while indigenous cultural practices often struggle to receive similar attention and support.
The traditional ruler stressed that Yoruba culture contains valuable traditions, moral lessons, historical knowledge and social values that deserve greater recognition and promotion.
He called on governments at all levels, wealthy individuals, corporate organisations and other private-sector stakeholders to invest more in cultural programmes and initiatives that promote indigenous heritage.
Oba Olufayo warned that without deliberate efforts to preserve and promote traditional values, some important aspects of the nation's cultural heritage could gradually disappear.
He urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for protecting their cultural identity and ensuring that future generations inherit traditions they can understand, appreciate and proudly uphold.
The monarch maintained that promoting indigenous culture requires collective commitment, particularly from those with the financial resources and influence to support cultural development.
