Oko-Olowo Flyover: Relief Finally Comes for Residents After Years of Accident Fears

Residents and road users around Oko-Olowo in Kwara State may soon heave a sigh of relief as the Federal Ministry of Works has commenced construction of the long-awaited Oko-Olowo flyover.

The development is welcome news to residents who have endured the risks and challenges associated with the busy road, where reports of serious accidents have continued to raise concerns over the safety of motorists, pedestrians and other road users.

The Oko-Olowo axis is a major link between the northern and southern parts of the country, making the road heavily used by commercial vehicles, private motorists and pedestrians.

For residents, the commencement of the flyover is more than just another road project. It represents hope for safer movement, reduced traffic pressure and an end to years of avoidable danger on the route.

The project followed sustained intervention by Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, alongside other stakeholders who had continued to push for federal attention to the road.

During an inspection visit to Kwara in October 2025, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, informed Governor AbdulRazaq that the project would commence in 2026 following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Federal Ministry of Works subsequently announced the project in June 2026 alongside other major road projects across Kwara, Kogi and Oyo states.

With construction now underway, residents of Oko-Olowo and surrounding communities have expressed excitement, hoping that the project will be completed without unnecessary delays and deliver the safety and ease of movement they have long desired.

For the people, however, the real celebration will come when the flyover is completed, opened to traffic and begins to save lives.
