UNIZIK ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid August Salaries

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary to its members.

The decision was reached at the union’s congress held in Awka on Monday, September 7, 2026.

ASUU-UNIZIK said the action was taken in line with the standing resolution of the union’s National Executive Council, which allows branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.

The union said its members had experienced incomplete salary payments on more than three occasions, describing the situation as frustrating.

The strike will affect both academic and administrative services provided by the affected lecturers, with the union directing members to withdraw their services until the outstanding August salary is fully paid.

The development could disrupt academic activities at the university if the salary issue is not resolved quickly.

ASUU-UNIZIK has also called on the university authorities and the Federal Government to intervene urgently and prevent the situation from worsening.

The latest action adds to the recurring tension between university workers and authorities over salary delays and payment-related issues in Nigeria's university system.
