Parents Driving Examination Malpractice in Nigeria, Says Former JAMB Registrar

Former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has attributed the rising rate of examination malpractice in Nigeria largely to the actions of parents rather than candidates.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, Oloyede described parents' involvement in examination fraud as one of the most disturbing experiences of his 10-year tenure as JAMB registrar.

He said many parents actively encourage and facilitate cheating in a bid to secure admission for their children into tertiary institutions, exposing them to dishonest and criminal behaviour at an early stage.

According to Oloyede, most candidates are not the masterminds of examination malpractice, stressing that parents bear greater responsibility for the growing trend.

He noted that he was often emotionally affected by the extent to which some parents went to organise and support examination fraud, warning that such actions undermine the future of both the children and the nation.

The former JAMB registrar urged parents to provide their children with strong moral values and integrity instead of encouraging dishonest practices that could have lasting negative consequences.
