Funeral Directors Renew Call for Stricter Regulation After Bush Conviction

The conviction and sentencing of disgraced funeral director Robert Bush has intensified calls for stronger regulation of the funeral industry, as reputable operators seek to restore public confidence in the profession.

Among those backing tougher oversight is Kevin Moxon, who operates Moxon's Family Funeral Directors. Moxon believes the Bush scandal has seriously damaged public trust in the funeral profession and has strengthened the case for urgent reforms.

He supports the introduction of statutory regulation, including regular inspections and compliance checks, to ensure all funeral providers operate under the same professional standards and code of practice.

The renewed calls come after Bush was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a series of offences, including failing to bury or cremate the deceased, deceiving grieving families by providing the ashes of strangers, and defrauding nearly 200 families.

The National Association of Funeral Directors has also reiterated its long-standing call for compulsory statutory regulation across the funeral sector, arguing that stronger oversight is essential to protect bereaved families and maintain confidence in the profession.

The Bush case has reignited nationwide debate over funeral industry standards, with growing support for stricter licensing requirements, independent inspections and stronger enforcement measures aimed at preventing similar abuses in the future.
