Former American gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for his role in the 1996 killing of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur.

A court in Las Vegas, Nevada, handed down the sentence on Tuesday, October 13, nearly 30 years after the musician was fatally shot in a drive-by attack that became one of the most widely discussed cases in hip-hop history.

Davis, 63, was convicted of first-degree murder in August after prosecutors accused him of organising the attack and supplying the firearm used in the shooting.

During sentencing, Judge Carli Kierny stressed that Davis had to be held accountable for his role in Shakur’s death, which deprived the rapper’s family of his future.

HOW TUPAC WAS KILLED

Shakur, popularly known as 2Pac, was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a car near the Las Vegas Strip. He died six days later at the age of 25.

Prosecutors told the court that the attack was motivated by revenge following an earlier confrontation at the MGM Grand casino, where Shakur and members of his entourage assaulted Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson.

According to the prosecution, Davis helped organise the retaliation and supplied a gun to an associate in the vehicle from which the shots were fired.

Anderson, who was suspected of being the gunman, died in 1998 without being charged over Shakur’s killing.

CASE REMAINED UNSOLVED FOR DECADES

For years, the murder remained unsolved despite extensive investigations and public speculation about those responsible.

The investigation gained new momentum after Davis discussed his alleged involvement in media interviews.

Investigators arrested him in 2023, and prosecutors later relied on his previous statements during the trial.

Davis’s defence team challenged the prosecution’s account, arguing that his claims were unreliable and that physical evidence linking him directly to the shooting was lacking. However, the jury found him guilty.

DAVIS PLANS TO APPEAL

Following his conviction, Davis indicated that he would appeal the verdict, maintaining his challenge to the case against him.

Shakur’s death remains a defining event in American hip-hop history. Known for songs such as California Love and Dear Mama, the rapper left a lasting influence on music and popular culture.

The sentencing marks a major development in a case that remained unresolved for nearly three decades.
