Ogun Declares Thursday Public Holiday for Traditional Worshippers Day ‎

Ogun State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Isese Day celebration.

The state said the decision underscores its commitment to preserving and promoting Yoruba culture, heritage and traditional values. ‎ ‎

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government said the holiday would provide adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion with an opportunity to honour their ancestors, observe traditional rites and celebrate the spiritual and cultural values associated with the occasion. ‎ ‎

According to the statement, Isese Day also serves as a platform to strengthen community bonds among practitioners while encouraging wider appreciation of the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. ‎ ‎

The government recalled that August 20 was formally declared a public holiday in Ogun State in 2023, following a resolution of the Ogun State House of Assembly and the approval of Governor Dapo Abiodun. ‎ ‎

It added that the observance reflects the administration’s recognition of the role of culture and traditional institutions in preserving the state’s identity and promoting social cohesion. ‎ ‎

Residents were urged to mark the celebration peacefully and responsibly, while respecting the beliefs, rights and practices of others.
