Kwara Residents Urge Govt to Key Into Tinubu’s Electricity Reform

Residents of Kwara State have urged the state government to key into President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s electricity reform under the Electricity Act 2023 to address the state’s persistent power supply challenges.

The appeal was made by callers during a public affairs radio programme monitored by NEWSMONGER on Friday.

They expressed concern that Kwara is not among the 16 states that had fully transitioned to state electricity regulation as of July 2026.

The Electricity Act 2023, a major component of the Tinubu administration’s power sector reform, allows states to establish and regulate their own electricity markets, including intrastate generation, transmission and distribution.

The callers said Kwara should take advantage of the new framework to attract investment, develop local solutions and improve electricity supply to homes, businesses and communities across the state.

They also called on the Kwara State Commissioner for Energy to explain what the government is doing to take advantage of the reform and whether the state has commenced moves towards establishing its own electricity regulatory framework.

The participants stressed that residents deserve clear information on the government’s plans, particularly as other states are already taking steps to benefit from the decentralisation of Nigeria’s electricity sector.

They urged the Kwara Government to make electricity reform a priority and ensure the state is not left behind in an initiative they believe could help address its long-standing power challenges.
