Colombia’s new President, Abelardo De La Espriella, has vowed to take a hard line against drug trafficking and narco-terrorism, while promising economic reforms and closer ties with the United States.

The right-wing politician narrowly defeated leftist Senator Iván Cepeda in June’s presidential runoff, marking a major political shift to the right in Colombia.
In his inaugural address, De La Espriella pledged to restore security and confront what he described as narco-terrorist groups, while rejecting further negotiations with armed organisations.
He also promised economic reforms, including fiscal austerity and measures to revive the oil and gas sector, while seeking closer relations with the United States and President Donald Trump.
