Colombia’s New President Vows to ‘Crush’ Narco-Terrorism

Colombia’s newly inaugurated President, Abelardo De La Espriella, has vowed to take a tough approach against drug trafficking and armed criminal groups as he begins his four-year term.

The right-wing politician narrowly defeated leftist Senator Iván Cepeda in June’s presidential runoff, marking a major political shift to the right in Colombia.

In his inaugural address, De La Espriella pledged to restore security and confront what he described as narco-terrorist groups, while rejecting further negotiations with armed organisations.

He also promised economic reforms, including fiscal austerity and measures to revive the oil and gas sector, while seeking closer relations with the United States and President Donald Trump.
