Nigerians Mourn Afenifere Leader Reuben Fasoranti as He Dies at 100
NewsmongerNigerians mourn the death of Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti, who has passed away at the age of 100.

The death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the respected elder statesman and national leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has sparked widespread mourning following the announcement of his passing at the age of 100.

News of his death, announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, has drawn attention to the life and legacy of a man whose decades of public service, political activism and commitment to democratic governance earned him respect across Nigeria.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa confirmed the development in a statement, expressing sadness over the loss and describing Fasoranti as a man of wisdom, integrity and selfless service.

The governor noted that the late Afenifere leader made lasting contributions to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria, adding that his guidance and firm stand on justice and good governance would be greatly missed.

Fasoranti was a leading figure in the progressive political movement associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He played an active role in Nigeria's political development and served as Commissioner for Finance under the administration of the late Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983.

Beyond politics, he was an educationist who established schools and promoted education as a tool for community development. He also became a prominent voice in the struggle against military rule and the campaign for democratic governance.

As Afenifere leader, he was associated with calls for restructuring, true federalism, justice and better governance in Nigeria. His death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of Yoruba political leadership.

Fasoranti turned 100 on May 11, 2026, an achievement that attracted tributes from President Bola Tinubu and other prominent Nigerians, who praised his long years of service and commitment to public life.

As condolences continue to follow the announcement of his death, attention is turning to the legacy of a leader whose life spanned Nigeria's colonial era, independence, military rule and the return to democracy.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, according to the initial report.
